Writer’s Studio

Eric J. Smith Architect designed this Writer’s Studio as a secluded sanctuary on a wooded property in Connecticut. The structure sits on a sloping site that overlooks a steep ravine and serves as a dedicated space for creativity and quiet reflection.

Materiality and Landscape Integration

The design team focused on creating a building that feels rooted in its specific landscape while maintaining a distinct modernist aesthetic. Large structural elements are cantilevered over the slope to minimize the footprint on the forest floor.

Transparency and 180-Degree Views

The design relies on expansive floor to ceiling glass walls to connect the interior workspace with the woods. These sliding Vitrocsa Invisible Wall systems allow the occupant to open the studio completely to the sights and sounds of the ravine.

Architect Eric J. Smith noted in his America ByDesign interview, “The reason that we specified their product is as you can see, the frame pieces for these windows are extremely thin and yet they’re quite strong. The glass that we have in this room offers 180° view and that was one of the key objectives of this space.”

The slender frames disappear into the architecture to prioritize the view, a feature common to the Vitrocsa systems. These glass panels also provide high thermal performance to ensure the studio remains functional during cold Connecticut winters. This project demonstrates how high quality glazing transforms a small structure into an immersive experience.
